How to Reset an AirTag

While AirTags don't have a traditional reset button, "resetting" them involves removing them from your Apple ID and then re-pairing them. This is useful if you're selling or giving away your AirTag, or if you're experiencing issues with it.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Remove the AirTag from your Apple ID: Go to the "Find My" app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Locate your AirTag in the "Items" tab. Swipe up on the AirTag and tap "Remove Item." You may need to be near the AirTag for this to work. You can find more info about that subject here: Removing%20AirTag%20From%20Apple%20ID

  2. Resetting the AirTag (Battery Removal Method):

    • Press down on the polished stainless steel battery cover of the AirTag and rotate it counterclockwise until it stops.
    • Remove the battery.
    • Reinsert the battery.
    • Press down on the battery until you hear a sound.
    • Repeat this process (remove and reinsert the battery, listening for a sound) four more times. You should hear a sound each time you reinsert the battery. This is crucial for the reset.
    • After the fifth sound, the AirTag is reset.
    • Reattach the battery cover by aligning the three tabs and rotating it clockwise. More details about this can be found here: Battery%20Removal%20Method
  3. Confirmation: After completing the steps above, the AirTag is ready to be paired with a new Apple ID. If you were having issues, try setting it up again. If you gave it away, the new owner can now add it to their Apple ID. Confirmation details can be found here: AirTag%20Confirmation

Important Considerations:

  • Make sure the AirTag is no longer associated with your Apple ID before giving it to someone else. Otherwise, they won't be able to use it.
  • The AirTag needs to be near your iPhone or iPad during the removal process.
  • The sound after reinserting the battery is key to knowing if the reset is working.
  • This "reset" process essentially makes the AirTag available for pairing with a new Apple ID. The whole process can be find in there: Resetting%20Process
